NIMCET 2010

3, 8, 13, 24, 41, (….)

Solution

Differences:
8 − 3 = 5
13 − 8 = 5
24 − 13 = 11
41 − 24 = 17

Next difference follows pattern: 5, 5, 11, 17, 23 … (add 6 every time after first)

So next number = 41 + 23 = 64, but it is not in options.
Check second pattern:

Another pattern:
3 + 5 = 8
8 + 5 = 13
13 + 11 = 24
24 + 17 = 41
41 + 29 = 70 (differences are +5, +5, +11, +17, +29 → prime numbers)
